Dr. Robert Sumner passed away in December 2016. The Biblical Evangelist newspaper is no longer being published and the ministry of Biblical Evangelism has ceased operation.

The remaining inventory of his books and gospel tracts was transferred to The Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles and may be ordered here.

Off the Cuff (Part 3)
Dr. Robert L. Sumner

LAND OF FRUIT AND

NUTS, CALIFORNIA

In San Diego a pastor and his wife had a Bible study they were conducting in their own home (on Good Friday) interrupted by a county official who asked such vital questions as “are you a terrorist?” (No, not that. Terrorists seem to have perfect freedom in the Golden Bear State, crossing the border at will.)

Instead, the questions were: did the class meet regularly, did they say such things as “amen?” and “praise the Lord?” and “do you pray?” Getting ‘yes’ answers, they were told they were in violation of San Diego Country rules and must immediately cease and desist or get a permit (which could cost thousands – California is about bankrupt and needs cash, you know).

And what if they didn’t stop that (terrorist?) assembly – “an unlawful use of land” – the official warned they would be slapped with “ever increasing fines.”

Ah, America, the land of the “free” and the home of the brave.

Oh, did we mention the huge crowds meeting in that residential home? It is an average of about 15 folks, which would put it on a par with a beer party (which is okay in CA), a union meeting to discuss how to put Wal-Mart out of business (which is okay in CA), a card party (which is okay in CA), weekly Monday Night football parties (oh, we mentioned that under “beer party” didn’t we?) – all of which are perfectly okay in lovely San Diego. But for a baker’s dozen or so people meeting to pray, study the Bible, and maybe some of them even forgetting their decorum and saying ‘amen’ or ‘praise the Lord’ (horrors!), forget it!

WHAT DID NANCY KNOW?

AND WHEN?

We refer to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her rant on her televised press conference. It was something to behold. Stuttering, stammering, losing her notes, repeating herself over and over, nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof, she was trying to deny she hadn’t been informed by the Bush administration regarding waterboarding.

Congressman Porter Goss, her Republican counterpart, attended the same briefing she did and wrote in The Wall Street Journal: "I am slack jawed to read that members claim to have not understood that the techniques on which they were briefed were to actually be employed; or that specific techniques such as 'waterboarding' were never mentioned."

Perhaps Mrs. Pelosi wasn’t listening during the briefings. It could be that she was doodling, making notes and plans about how she could one day become Speaker of the House (she was not at that time).

She eventually called the CIA liars because its account disagreed with hers. But as Bobby Eberle wrote in ‘The Loft’: “The CIA has also released records which counter Pelosi's claim of not knowing that waterboarding was being used. According to the C.I.A. records, Ms. Pelosi attended the Sept. 4 [2002] briefing about the agency's interrogation techniques with … Representative Porter J. Goss of Florida. Based on agency notes from the briefing, the two lawmakers were told the specific techniques ‘that had been employed’ on Abu Zubaydah. CIA records and the accounts of others attending the briefings do not paint a good picture of the accuracy of Pelosi's defense.” Or, at least, of her faulty memory.

It gets worse. As late as the end of 2007 the Washington Post reported a group of lawmakers, which included Pelosi, “was given a virtual tour of the CIA’s overseas detention sites and harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.” Waterboarding was one of them, but no one objected to it. In fact, the Post reported, two of them told the CIA “to push harder, two U.S. officials said.”

A “WOUNDED, CRIPPLED”

DODGE DEALER SPEAKS OUT

May 19, 2009

On Thursday, May 14, 2009 I was notified that my Dodge franchise, that we purchased, will be taken away from my family on June 9, 2009 without compensation and given to another dealer at no cost to them.

HOW IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CAN THIS HAPPEN?

THIS IS A PRIVATE BUSINESS NOT A GOVERNMENT ENTITY.

This is beyond imagination! My business is being stolen from me through NO FAULT OF OUR OWN. We did NOTHING wrong.

This atrocity will most likely force my family into bankruptcy. This will also cause our 50+ employees to be unemployed. How will they provide for their families? This is a total economic disaster.

HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN IN A FREE MARKET ECONOMY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

I beseech your help, and look forward to your reply. Thank you.
Sincerely,
George C. Joseph

HANKY PANKY IN

WASHINGTON!

Here is what your Congress tried to pull off without your knowledge. House bill HR-1913 was a hate crime law that included “sexual orientation” but left it undefined. That would have meant that any and every perversion would have been protected. The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists 30 that would have been covered. In this family magazine we are not even going to name them – say nothing of telling what they mean – because just the printing would be vile and distasteful! And it would probably have put 50% of biblical preachers in jail for preaching against those sins. (Wait a minute, do we have that many courageous biblical preachers today? We used to!)

HR-1913 easily breezed through the House of Representatives 249-175 under Nancy “I Wasn’t Told About Waterboarding” Pelosi, but it got stalled in the Senate after 500,000 Fed Ex ‘overnight’ letters were receive opposing it. Even Obama’s plea, "I urge members on both sides of the aisle to act on this important civil rights issue by passing this legislation to protect all of our citizens from violent acts of intolerance," didn’t help.

Do we ever have a rotten government, or what? A hate crime bill like this one will prosecute people for what they believe! In America? Has it come to this?

The administration says this bill would have no effect on preachers and their sermons. Congressman Steve King of Iowa insists “that is simply not true.” He ought to know, being very familiar with the bill; in fact he made several attempts so amend it – one of which would have excluded pedophiles from protection. The Democrats shot it down, which should tell you something about some Democrats and about the honesty of the bill – seemingly merely dancing to the Sodomite tune. Even if there is no effect there, it pulverizes the American principle of free speech.

What about those found guilty of the above bill? It called for as much as 10 years in the slammer, but, in some cases, life in prison.

Have no fear, the Democrats will bring it up again next year and try to ram it through again. This year was not the first time they’ve tried it. By the way, Senate members referred to this bill as “The Pedophile Protection Act.”

Indeed!

THIS & THAT . . .

Happy 4th to you! Founder Thomas Jefferson put it like this: “The Declaration of Independence ... [is the] declaratory charter of our rights, and the rights of man.” At least we know how it was originally intended…

One of our great Supreme Court Justices, Joseph Story, warned America: "It yet remains a problem to be solved in human affairs, whether any free government can be permanent, where the public worship of God, and the support of religion, constitute no part of the policy or duty of the state in any assignable shape" (emphasis added)…

In President Obama’s first 100 days in office, he spent more than his predecessor did in his entire four-year first term!...

Are you hearing all this talk about a “Palestinian State” for the Arabs? They had one; got it the same time the Jews got Israel (and the Arab plot was bigger). It was named Palestine. Later its name was changed to Jordan. Now no Palestinian refugee is allowed entrance into Jordan, while the world calls for Israel to give the refugees its land…

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met with his American counterpart Barack Obama recently and according to WorldNetDaily the latter assured the enemy of Israel that he envisions the creation of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. He also assured the Arab he would not let Israeli leadership get in the way of his new Arab relationship…

Are we raising a nation of morons? A Rasmussen Reports poll found 20% think socialism is superior to capitalism and another 27% said they didn’t know which was best. That’s nearly half the country! Don’t they know what has happened to all the nations around the world that adopted it?…

My good friend, Missionary Jim Norton, has written over 3,800 poems. That puts him in the class with Fanny Crosby, Avis Christiansen, Isaac Watts, Grace Noll Crowell, Charles Wesley and some of the other greats…

Ah, those pro-life folks. They rightly deserve to be targets of hate crime lawsuits, right? But what about the abortion clinic Wayne Webster runs in Rockport (IL)? He has sacrilegious symbols in his windows (along with rubber chickens in nooses). There is a video of a crony coming to the clinic with a pit bulldog and screaming vile, anti-religious language at the pro-life peaceful picketers. Oh, yes, he also features a “nun” doll in a coffin with a needle in her heart. But that is not “hate,” of course. Or, is it? Enough already. A hate crime lawsuit has been filed…

A little internet humor that really isn’t funny. Letter to my bank: “Dear Sirs, One of my checks was returned marked ‘insufficient funds.’ In view of current developments in the banking industry, does that refer to me or to you?”…

Media Research Center president Brent Bozell noted, “After 100 days, the media still looks more like the president's advertising team than the people's watchdog"…

President Obama has an “auto task force” to oversee failing auto companies. Not a single solitary one has any experience in the automobile business and several do not even own cars (so don’t drive). Congressman Steven LaTourette of Ohio sent a letter to Obama, signed by 36 of his colleagues, expressing concern about what it taking place. Socialism is when the government owns the companies. It appears we are headed with lightning speed toward that day with the auto industry…

Of more than passing interest: Blogger Doug Ross says his investigation shows Chrysler dealers who donated to the GOP in the last election are the first to be shut down. Those decisions are being made by Obama’s “auto task force,” not Chrysler…

ChryslerGate may make WaterGate look like child’s play during amateur hour. Regarding the above, how do you explain that some of the Chrysler “Republican” dealerships being closed are the most profitable in the corporation’s chain? How do you explain that some being closed are strong competitors of prominent Democrats or huge Democrat contributors? How do you explain that one of the victims is a Republican Congressman (who learned from a colleague what he had lost; not from Chrysler) from a conservative district in Florida, who owns 23 dealerships in Florida and North Carolina?...

Mack McLarty is the former Clinton White House chief of staff. He and his partner, a strong Democrat contributor, own a chain of dealerships in Arkansas and Missouri. No, their dealerships aren’t being hit, but their competitors are dropping like flies…

Something going on is very, very fishy…

Political analyst Rich Galen noted that a share of General Motors on 4/28/2000 cost $93.63. After it filed for bankruptcy last month, it was trading at $.75. With the new Government Motors, as it is being called, Obama’s crew will own over 72.5% of the stock and the unions (UAW) 17.5%. The two will control 90% of the stock. And this is all being done outside our Constitution…

Regarding the above, where in the Constitution is authority given to do this kind of stuff? Or anything like it? Perhaps we should not be surprised from a leader who adamantly refuses to document his Constitutional eligibility for the office, fighting in the courts having to do so...

House Minority Leader John Boehner is right: "The president's first 100 days can be summed up in three words: spending, taxing, and borrowing"…

Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev predicted this in 1959: “We cannot expect the Americans to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of Socialism, until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism”…

Are Americans worried about security? In the last three months of 2008, Americans bought enough guns to arm the national armies of both China and India – a total of 12.7 million guns last year. Gun sales in the first three months of 2009 were 27 percent higher year-over-year than the first three months of 2008 (which also recorded record sales). Maybe some don’t want a socialist government. Or they are fearful of our government’s ability to protect them…

A promise our President kept: he claimed his administration would set a new standard for ethics. Alas, he kept his word and his administration has lowered the standard considerably, as daily news reports show. For a time it appeared only tax cheaters were considered for federal posts…

Arlen Specter is already thinking like a Democrat. On American patriot Jack Kemp’s death he opined: "If we had pursued what President Nixon declared in 1970 as the war on cancer, we would have cured many strains. I think Jack Kemp would be alive today. And that research has saved or prolonged many lives, including mine." As columnist James Taranto noted: "Specter's use of Kemp's death is not only tasteless [and tacky] but nonsensical. If Republicans killed Kemp by blocking cancer research, how is it that the research they blocked prolonged Specter's life?"…

Who originated the slogan, “Life is uncertain; eat dessert first”? It was American writer Ernestine Ulmer. (I’m sure you were dying to know!)…

Are the Marines hard up under Obama in trying to recruit the few and the proud? Opal Blackwell Walker, just two weeks from retirement as a North Florida paper carrier, received a letter from the Marine recruitment station, "Do you think you have what it takes to be a Marine? Are you prepared for one of the most demanding challenges you will ever face?" She went to the local recruiting office for duty, but the Marines turned her down. It seems she was a tad past the age 29 recruitment limit…

Hey, who needs prayer when you’ve got Obama? For the first time since the Clinton years the White House ruled “no observance” of the National Day of prayer…

While there was no prayer observance, Obama made a proclamation dedicating the entire MONTH of June as “gay pride.” His priorities are different than mine – and probably yours!...

Sue You at the Pole? School authorities banned posters advertising See You at the Pole and the National Day of Prayer at the Lakeview Elementary School in Mt. Juliet (TN) on the opinion of an “Assistant” Principal that they violated the Constitution. Five parents sued. U.S. District Judge Robert L. Echols ruled the parents right and the school wrong, calling it “a misunderstanding of the law.” Obviously and, to us, apparently…

Campaign Obama said in rallies in Pennsylvania and Idaho last Fall: "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear ... I think people can take me at my word." Now President Obama is about to lower the boom on certain types of guns. So much for his word…

Lady leader calls Pope’s hand! German Chancellor Angela Merkel demanded Pope Benedict XVI “clarify” the Vatican’s position after Benedict lifted the excommunication of British traditionalist Bishop Richard Williamson – who denies that the Holocaust ever happened! Williamson and other deniers in the Society of St. Pius X are especially offensive to Jews because Pius XII, who was pope during W.W. II, was charged with not doing enough to stop the Holocaust on his watch…

Those of you who have long believed (like your editor) that National Public Radio (NPR) is ungodly (if not anti-God) here’s proof. As of May 1, the new policy of NPR is: "NPR Member Stations shall provide ONLY [emphasis added] nonsectarian, non-political, noncommercial educational content on all broadcast channel(s) and related media distribution platforms such as member partners that use the NPR member brands." Translation: nothing religious is to appear on the radio network financed with your dollars (and mine). That ruling doesn’t apply to evolution and other nonsense, however…

The Jewish actor, Ron Silver, died of cancer in March. He was a Hollywood rarity who promoted conservatism in an area where almost everyone was of the Sean Penn/Susan Sarandon idiocy (you know, “If Bush wins I’m moving to Australia,” but each time after he won didn’t even move next door) and his outspokenness cost him highly in work (his livelihood) and friends – even his brother, Mitchell, bad-mouthed him. A real patriot, he gladly paid the price without a whimper…

Barak Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats are fond of referring to the “mess we inherited,” referring to the eight years under George Bush. Have they forgotten that they controlled both House and Senate for the last two years of that period? In short, it is a mess they inherited from themselves

On July 4, conservatives are having another T. E. A. (Taxed Enough Already) Party…

In President Obama’s first 100 days in office, he proposed a 2010 budget (and it passed) totaling $3,600,000,000,000 (yes, Virginia, that is $3.6 trillion). When that pork-laden bill passed, Obama had the audacity to proclaim, "I'm proud that we passed a recovery plan free of earmarks." Actually, there were over 8,000…

Newsweek’s Easter issue had a black cover – with red ink in the shape of a cross in the middle – announcing “The End of Christian America.” It seems some poll taker proclaimed the number of Americans willing to call themselves ‘Christian’ had dropped 10 points since 1990. As Brent Bozell noted, Newsweek’s admitted circulation has gone down 52% since 1990. It has lost a million subscribers. Wouldn’t it be more accurate to talk about “The End of Newsweek”?...

New York judge Edward Korman ruled that little 17-year-old teens can buy the infamous “morning after” pill without a prescription. The Obama administration did not challenge it so it is now the law of the land. Horrors!...

The Supreme Court got one right. In a 5-4 decision (and these decisions may be 8-1 for liberals after Obama gets through stacking the court) the robed Supremes ruled the Federal Communications Commission can slap it to broadcasters who allow even one case of indecent language on the air...

In President Obama’s first 100 days in office, he proposed (and it passed) a federal budget for 2010 with a ‘projected’ deficit of $1,750,000, 000,000 (yes, that’s a $1.75 trillion shortfall)…

Baptist Press note: "President Obama's proposed budget for 2010 would eliminate federal funding for abstinence education programs in public schools, replacing them with so-called comprehensive sex education programs that promote the use of condoms and other contraceptives among the nation's teenagers." He has a ‘better’ plan than saying no: just pass out condoms (and hope they work)...

Well, Associate Supreme Court Justice David Souter has announced his retirement, but we are not doing any handsprings. While we have never been a fan, he did occasionally swing a decision when he sided with conservatives in a rare case. Since Obama is the one picking his successor (we warned of this last Fall, remember), it will be a radical of the first order, something like the only woman currently on the Court…

Ah, California! The Alameda Unified School District announced it was considering a special, supplemental class to “eradicate” homophobia from the minds of its students. The room open to the public about it was filled to overflowing with protestors. Oh, did we mention the students were kindergarten kids? This is unbelievable!...

The Obama administration has a new energy bill called cap and trade that my Congressman tells me is really “cap and tax.” He says it is a $624 billion national energy tax that will “be paid by anyone who turns on a light switch or plugs in an appliance. It is estimated that [it] will raise electricity rates 90% after adjusting for inflation, gas prices 74%, and natural gas prices 55%. A study that considered a similar proposal estimated that this type of proposal could cost every American household roughly $3,100.” I thought those earning under $250,000 were promised “no new taxes”?...

Is there a way to go directly from May to July? Our “change” President issued an official proclamation making June "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month." He lauds the accomplishments of the perverts but says “there is more to be done.” Horrors…

As we have already seen during the first six months of this administration, using the convenient cover of the financial meltdown, there is nothing it won’t do to gain more and more power over the people. To illustrate, let me quote Lee Bellinger, editor and publisher of The American Sentinel: “Senator Jim Inhofe and Congressman Brad Sherman revealed Outgoing Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson shockingly told Members of Congress during recent closed-door Capitol Hill meetings that the financial meltdown underway could become so extreme martial law might have to be imposed on the American people.” Would that be a surprise to anyone?...

Tough luck, pro-abortion politicians who have been riding that shirttail to election. The latest Gallup Poll, for the first time ever, says the majority of folks (read that voters) are now pro-life (only 42% said they were pro-abortion)...

Alec Garrard, who is pushing 80, has constructed a massive replica of Herod’s Temple (the one during Jesus’ time). He has invested 33,000 hours on his masterpiece that measures 20’ long x 12’ wide. Garrard, a retired farmer, says he won’t have it finished in his lifetime, but folks have already come from all over the world to his Norfolk home for a look-see. He has “hand-baked and painted every clay brick and tile and even sculpted 4,000 tiny humans” (one inch high) to populate the courtyards. I saw it on the internet; very impressive…

Southern Baptists are like everyone else in this: baptisms are down (fewest since 1987; evangelism failure) but mission giving is up (2.3 percent; i.e., paying someone else to do their job for them). Will that work?…

Read it and weep: The United States Senate confirmed Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (KS) to head the Department of Health and Human Services. What a job for a woman who has indirectly “killed” babies in Kansas by the thousands. She had originally admitted $12,450 in gifts from Dr. George Tiller (the infamous late-term abortionist; his clinic is called the “late-term abortion capital of America”), got caught and said she made an “inadvertent” mistake and it was really $39,600 – then a letter from Tiller surfaced showing he had given another $200,000 to help defeat her opponent, a pro-life candidate. What a Department of “Health” that will be…

She denied she was a strong pro-abortionist when testifying before the committee, but for two years running Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann (Sebelius is a Roman Catholic) requested she not “present herself for communion because of her support for abortion rights"…

Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) president Richard Land called her confirmation "a sad day for America and for America's unborn children.” Amen. Just five days before her confirmation she vetoed a bill making abortion tougher (it would have required "increased accountability by late-term abortion doctors" like Tiller)…

Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas, who has loudly supported pro-life causes, betrayed that movement when he voted to confirm Sebelius. Someone says, “She was from his state and it is traditional for senators to do that.” Oh, I thought a senator’s first allegiance was to his country. Am I wrong?...

We are sorry someone shot and killed Tiller while ushering in his Lutheran church. It was God’s job to take care of him, not ours. A friend wrote: “Apparently it is all right for him to kill little babies, but the law makes a distinction when the late term takes place this late in a person's life. Also the shooter may not have been an approved doctor.” Let’s call it “assisted suicide.” I call it suicide because of his lifestyle and warnings he had; this was the second attempt on his life (shot in both arms previously) and an earlier bombing of his clinic…

The man who apparently pulled the trigger, killing Tiller, is Scott Roeder, whom his family says has a history of mental problems. The victim, deliberately and defiantly killed his unborn victims. There is a difference (both, of course, as wrong as sin)…
