Dr. Robert Sumner passed away in December 2016. The Biblical Evangelist newspaper is no longer being published and the ministry of Biblical Evangelism has ceased operation. The remaining inventory of his books and gospel tracts was transferred to The Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles and may be ordered here. Off the Cuff (Part 3) THIS & THAT… We still send it free! Anyone who wants The Biblical Evangelist can have it sent to his or her home absolutely free. The Christopher Columbus, whom Americans honor at this season, exclaimed, “I am a most unworthy sinner, but I have cried out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely.” But our school kids won’t hear that – in fact, they probably won’t hear about We did not want to sully our tribute to Jerry Falwell so we waited until this issue to mention that the Fred Phelps/Westboro Baptist Church gang (Topeka, KS) showed up at his funeral, protesting. This seemingly insane, hate-filled group changed plans to picket a Here's our 'Back to School' thought, from the pen of ex-President Theodore In our last issue we quoted a couple of newspaper reviews of AiG’s new creation museum. Since then we read a major article – in fact, the cover story of City Beat, an As for the Speaking of bizarre, the sadistic case of dog fighting featuring Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons fits that bill. Losing dogs that didn’t expire in the ring were reportedly drowned, shot, hanged, electrocuted or killed by viciously slamming them on the ground. “Barbaric,” Senator Robert Byrd called it. People who treat animals thus are not apt to treat other people with respect. Perhaps parental failure caused sadism in the whole Vick family. His brother Marcus is the star college player cameras caught kicking a fallen rival player. Sadism (and dirty playing) must be a Vick family trait… "The American people are not racists. They don't hate immigrants. They [just] believe in the rule of law."... As you know, President Bush again vetoed a bill to fund embryonic stem cell research, saying it destroyed human life. Does it? Here is an illustration Baptist Press gave: Mike and Nicole Bell of Traverse City (MI) are proud parents of 17-month old twins, Michael and Paige. They were born via embryo adoption, using the stored frozen embryos from a lab (those the liberal left want to use for research). The next time you are in the Where have we heard this before? Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa heatedly told the press at a news conference, “I don’t believe that the details of my personal life are relevant to my job as mayor.” Mayor Rudy Guliante? Bill Clinton? Tony was talking about walking away from his wife Corina and two young children for an immoral relationship with Mirthala Salinas, a Hispanic TV anchorwoman… Samuel Adams – Puritan, Patriot and Founding Father of our Country – had this to say about the lives of leaders: "The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men." Today's politicians cry: "Our private lives are none of the public's business." Perhaps one of the differences lies in the fact Only in Talk about whistling through the cemetery! The "Take Back America" conference of Democrats in Good Baptist (!) Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Presidential candidate John Edwards, said in Dwight McKissic, the black Baptist preacher who has a 'tongues' prayer language and caused so much turmoil at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, has resigned from that school's board... Is New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg going to run for President as an Independent? According to The Patriot, whose assessment we've learned to trust: "His positions on important issues would make even the most shameless of RINOs blush: He is pro-abortion, pro-homosexual 'marriage,' pro-property tax, anti-gun and anti-Christian." All bother us, but the last the most... What did Edrica Goode (age 21) have in common with Holly Patterson (age 18) and Diana Lopez (age 25)? All three died at a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in During the last time frame available (2005-2006), Planned Parenthood, according to its own figures, performed 5,095 abortions a week, 725 a day, 30 every hour around the clock. Income from donations and clinics fell by $1.5 million, but taxpayer-funded government subsidies totaled $205.3, a 12% increase... Baptist Press reports that polls from Cornell University and Barna Research reveal only one out of 10 of today‘s children retain the faith and values of their parents. Most Dads and Moms are not doing their job, obviously... Who has the right to educate children? Parents or Big Brother? In Probably most are aware of the “sacred” river According to The Barna Group, even though the overwhelming majority of Americans say they believe in God, nearly one-third of the citizenry remain unchurched. Even worse, Barna referenced a book co-authored by a minister and an atheist, based on their visits to major churches: the unchurched aren’t wanted! Is that the impression visitors to your church receive?... There hasn’t been much comment about it, but did you know there are big groups of folks who want global warming? It consists of leaders in Northern States hoping to stop the exodus of Snow Birds, Winter Texans and others migrating to warmer climates every winter… Was she practicing for the Then there was the 4-year-old in After waiting several months, we still have no indication when the Discovery Channel (that gave us the fiction about Jesus, His wife and son) will produce a documentary on "the murderous exploits of the most Blessed Prophet Mohammed." Don’t hold your breath!... Churches, check out the Child Guard Systems, Inc., with offices in Richardson (TX) and Oklahoma City (OK). They are specialists in keeping sexual predators of kids off both volunteer and staff church positions. The Commenting on one of Al Gore's rallies, Jonah Goldberg observed, about Modanna shouting at the London concert: “’If you want to save the planet, I want you to start jumping up and down ... If you want to save the planet, let me see you jump!’ You just can’t beat that. What else could capture the canned juvenilia of a 48-year-old centimillionaire – who owns nine homes and has a ‘carbon footprint’ nearly 100 times larger than the norm – hectoring a bunch of well-off aging hipsters to show their Earth-love by jumping up and down like children?”... Albert Gore III (Al Gore's son) was arrested again, this time doing 100 mph on the San Diego Freeway. The arresting officer thought he smelled marijuana and so searched the car, finding, in addition to a small amount of the weed, Xanaz, Valium, Viodin and Adderall, for none of which he had a prescription. While daddy will lament Junior being caught with the narcotics (and probably get him off again), he should be pleased that he was driving a small 4-cylinder Toyota Prius, something within the ecology range to prevent global warming. But how he got that little car up to that speed we have no idea (maybe he ought to join NASCAR)... Why wasn't the legal absurdity of "Judge" Roy Pearson, Jr. – suing hard-working 'mom and pop' dry cleaner owners for $54 million (he started by asking $67 million) over a pair of his britches he said they lost – tossed out of court the moment it hit the fan? Why the waste of time and money conducting such a frivolous suit? The trial found the Jin ans Soo Chung family innocent and Superior Court Judge Judith Bartnoff ordered Pearson to pay all court costs – but their legal fees total over $100,000, even though their lawyer was working at a reduced rate. And it is a reminder we need strict constitutional judges on our benches, not nuts... To follow up a matter we briefly mentioned in the last issue, although like Amos I am neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, we predict the next major problem in the Southern Baptist Convention will be the Pentecostal tongues issue. It is a small step to go from private to public… The There is no way evolution can stand on its own two feet. That is why every effort to present any other theory of science but it is totally rejected by its backers. The powers that be refuse to even bring something else up to refute, demanding a monopoly on the subject. If a bad word is said of it, expect a law suit – or worse! Here in Is the European educational system more "fair and balanced" than ours? Apparently. The Council of Europe agreed to allow the teaching to Intelligent Design in its schools. While, as noted above, ID is a long way from creationism, it is more than our school system will permit... Can one be a minister and an idiot at the same time? Apparently you can! Ann Holmes Redding, a black Episcopal priest in the Since writing the above, the “Rt. Rev.” Geralyn Wolf, bishop of the Diocese of Rhode Island, another feminist preacher (who has authority over Redding because that is the diocese where she was ordained), notified Episcopal Church leaders everywhere that she had taken “the collar” from Sister Redding for one year (meaning she can’t function as a priest in any manner) so she could “reflect” on her dual allegiance. So it is “Rev.” (sic) Tori Spelling now, huh? Tori, daughter of Aaron (who cut her out of his $500,000,000 will) officiated at a Sodomite union recently at the bed-and-breakfast she runs. Ordained 7 hours earlier, she said the certificate was “in the mail.” Something tells me the marriage license will only be worth what it can bring on E-bay… Editor of Misinformation: Presidential wannabe Barack Obama, former member of Islam: “There was a time when the Christian Coalition determined that its number one legislative priority was tax cuts for the rich. I don’t know what Bible they’re reading, but it doesn’t jibe with my version." Maybe his version is still the Qu'ran!... According to the latest Pew Poll (which seems biased in favor of homosexuals), more and more Americans are opposing Sodomite marriages and Sodomite civil unions. People are waking up!... What's wrong with this statement: "Marriage is the foundation of the natural family and sustains family values." You don't see anything wrong with it? Neither do I! Alas, according to the Oakland (CA) government, it is “hate speech!” Some Christian black ladies, who organized as GNEA (Good News Employee Association) announced their group as "a forum for people of Faith to express their views on the contemporary issues of the day. With respect for the Natural Family, Marriage and Family Values." That's when the egg hit the fan. How dare these good ladies call Adam-and-Eve-style unions "natural" – as if Sodomites weren't! City officials called it "homophobic" and "disruptive." Really?... "There are more Muslims in So far, only In the What happens with “hate crimes” on the books? In Crystal Lake (IL) a 16-year-old girl handed out leaflets of two male students kissing that read, “God hates [she used a derogatory word for sodomites].” Tossed into the juvenile slammer for 20 days before being brought to court in shackles, the prosecuting attorney called it a “classic example” of the hate crime the law was designed to nab. Alas, he was wrong because the law was only directed at those committing “a criminal act with the intent to cause harm,” something not true here. (But she was wrong, too; God doesn’t hate sinners, He loves them. He only hates their sin!)… Apparently you can't vote for a Democrat in ’08 without favoring financial handouts to Sodomites. All the Donkey candidates say they support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act as it relates to granting federal monetary benefits to same-sex couples. Kucinich, in fact, openly supports Sodomite marriages for everyone!... What's wrong with Dr. James Holsinger, President Bush's nominee to be the 18th United States Surgeon General? A highly qualified cardiologist from the Do you remember when President Bill Clinton’s Surgeon General, Joycelyn Elders, spoke of “the un-Christian religious right, selling out our children in the name of religion”? Whereof did she speak? She was referencing the national outcry against her wholesale distribution of condoms to immature school children!... Is marriage a gamble? It shouldn’t be, but couples lined up "ankle deep" to get married in the Do the tax breaks passed through the efforts of President George W. Bush favor the wealthy (Democrats repeatedly call it “the Bush Tax Cut for the Rich”)? Let me give you the results found in A Congressional Budget Office paper, released in April 2004, the introduction of which reveals it was prepared at the request of Ranking Members of the Senate Budget Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, the House Budget Committee, the House Ways and Means Committee, and the Joint Economic Committee – hardly a partisan crowd. It examines how effective federal tax rates will change over the coming decade under current law – that is, if the provisions of tax laws enacted in 2001, 2002, and 2003 phase in, phase out, and “sunset” as scheduled. We are told “The paper uses the same methodology that CBO employed in its earlier estimates of effective tax rates, most recently in Effective Federal Tax Rates, 1997 to 2000 (August 2003) and Effective Federal Tax Rates: 1979-2001” Rather than being tax breaks for the wealthy, it concludes the opposite is true. But what would the Budget Office know, right?… Support your local sheriff? The top legal arm in Anderson County (SC), David Crenshaw, was caught driving around with an expired license (14 months outdated, in fact). While that was embarrassing, it was not so bad as when he took the driver’s exam to obtain a new one. He flunked it! (Not to worry, he passed the second time)... Do you remember that show where one network had ladies pretend they were underage girls making appointments with dirty old (and young) men, then when the latter showed up for their dates they faced television cameras? It happened in Murphy, We oppose bearing false witness (lying) of all forms and especially lying under oath (perjury). I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was found guilty of the latter and was on his way to a long stretch in the slammer (twice what sentencing guidelines called for) until Bush pardoned the prison part of his sentence. I am sure some reader will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the perjury for which he was condemned related to a faulty memory and if he had said repeatedly, a la Bill Clinton under oath, "I don't remember," instead of trying to recollect, he would be a free man today. No matter. But what about his accuser, Valerie Plame, who repeatedly under oath described herself as a CIA covert agent endangered by his statements? She is not now, never has been, and never will be a covert agent of the CIA. Is that kind of perjury okay?... Did you hear the Democrats when Bush commuted the prison part of Scooter Libby's sentence? Hillary Clinton was the loudest, crying: "This commutation sends the clear signal that in this Administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice ... [T]his is consistent with their philosophy; they believe that they should be able to do what they want to do, and that the law is a minor obstacle.” Incredible! We wonder if she said it with a straight face since her husband, in the waning hours of his administration, passed out pardons to his cronies like they were cotton candy. One was, as James Tarantt noted, for his "own brother, a central figure in the Whitewater scandal, and two members of his own cabinet, one of whom, unlike Libby, actually faced charges of mishandling national secrets." Another was for a Mafia-like figure who fled the country and renounced American citizenship to escape the law. Hillary really does want to be President, doesn't she? She had better pray that voters have a bad memory… The retail giant, Wal-Mart, has announced it will no longer support Sodomite groups. At the same time, it will not support its critics, saying its new policy will prevent "either supporting or opposing controversial issues."... One of our early and great United States Supreme Court Justices, Joseph Story, put it like this: "The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the palladium of the liberties of a republic."... Okay, all you euthanasia lovers who think folks in a coma are ‘dead,’ put this in your glass and drink it: Back in 1988, Polish Jan Grzebski was injured in an accident and was in a coma. Doctors said he couldn't live more than three years. He not only lived, but after almost two decades he came out of the coma to find The "Unfairness Doctrine" (misnamed "Fairness Doctrine") is making comeback in Congress. Aimed at silencing conservative talk shows, it would not only do that – it would put them out of business. And all because Americans don't want to listen to liberals... Revenge, how sweet it is! The What’s the biggest problem in It never happened to me when I was working my way through school, but 20-year-old Jessica Osborne in Angola (IN), who had to drop out twice because of finances, got a “tip” to help her finish the third time. A waitress at the local Pizza Hut, regular patrons about to move away left her with a check for $10,000 (from an education fund they had established after a family death)… While it didn’t make the splash in national news the above item did, one of Jerry Falwell’s last acts was to give a local waitress a free full-ride scholarship. She was waiting on him and his wife at the local Shaker’s not far from his school. When he learned of her troubles, he promised the scholarship – then died shortly afterward. In this case, his wife, Macel Falwell, saw to it that the commitment was fulfilled… Do "the Simpsons" make good Sunday School teachers? Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and his Anglican counterparts evidently think so. They are using, as Sunday School lessons, a Simpson comic book that purportedly teaches "spiritual truth and moral values." Our reaction: they've got to be kidding!... Both Republican and Democrat candidates seen sincere in wanting to protect the American citizenry. If we understand them, the former want to protect us from terrorists, especially the Islamic kind, and the latter want to protect us from global warming... Hopefully, like me, you didn’t see any of Baptist Al Gore’s concerts. Michael Reagan summed them up like this: “ Sudden thought: Did you ever why so many missing young women were “last seen” at a local bar?... Ah, those "chickens" in Remember the uproar and its consequent action of banning DDT caused by Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring? It resulted in the deaths of millions from mosquito-bred malaria. Maybe DDT wasn't so bad after all... Hey, all you wine lovers: did you ever look on the label of your favorite brand for “ingredients”? For some reason, the laws about labeling don’t apply to “the grape” (just the amount of alcohol), but some of the stuff in the cheaper brands are chicken, fish, milk and wheat products. It may also include oak chips, tartaric acid, oak gall nuts, citric acid, dissolved oxygen, copper, water and an agent to color it (white, red, pink, purple, etc.)… When we started preaching, one in 10 Americans was an alcoholic. We recently read that it is closer to one in three today. Many started downward with wine at dinner or beer at lunch… The “Gipper” said it: "As a former Democrat, I can tell you [that]... back in 1936, Mr. Democrat himself, Al Smith, the great American, came before the American people and charged that the leadership of his party was taking the party of Jefferson, Jackson, and Cleveland down the road under the banners of Marx, Lenin, and Stalin. And he walked away from his party, and he never returned to the day he died, because to this day, the leadership of that party has been taking that party ... down the road in the image of the labor socialist party of England"… Phillips Brooks, composer of ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem,’ summed it up well: "Some day, in years to come, you will be wrestling with the great temptation, or trembling under the great sorrow of your life. But the real struggle is here, now, in these quiet weeks. Now it is being decided whether, in the day of your supreme sorrow or temptation, you shall miserably fail or gloriously conquer. Character cannot be made except by a steady, long continued process"… We have mentioned the mental health of Cindy Sheehan before. Now she is trying to blackmail Nancy Peloski into doing her bidding or she will run for her seat in Congress! Cindy needs both sympathy and prayer… Cindy brought her circus to Keith Ellison, the Muslim Minnesotans elected to Congress, has now compared President Bush to Hitler. He said, “It’s almost like the Reichstag fire ... After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader [Hitler] of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted.” He was comparing this to 9/11… This sinner “pulled over” the wrong car! Advice from the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, John Jay: “The Bible is the best of all books, for it is the Word of God and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and in the next. Continue therefore to read it and to regulate your life by its precepts”... One thing we have always appreciated about Southern Baptists is the fact that, at their annual meetings (which many denominations/associations use for personal pleasures) they come early and do personal evangelism in the community. They call it "crossover." This year, at Jonah Goldberg observed: “Referring to opponents of the [Senate immigration] bill, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said, ‘We’ve been down this road before. No Catholics, no Jews, Irish, need apply. That’s not the Dinesh D'Souza said it well: "I've never understood all the nonsense about how we should be sympathetic toward illegals who came here to work and find a better life. We don't extend such sympathy to other people who routinely break the law. We aren't sympathetic, for instance, toward people who break into banks or hold up grocery stores in order to support their families and get a fresh start in life. We don't get teary-eyed about folks who engage in insider trading or bribery in order to send their kids to college and enjoy the American dream. We feel sorry for these lawbreakers, and than clap them into prison. I'm an immigrant myself, and I'm pro-immigration, but that means legal immigration. Down in Panama City Beach (FL) police have a unique, sure-fire way of catching illegals. They pull up to construction sites in their big patrol cars and watch who runs. They grab them and charge them with some misdemeanor like trespassing (running through or hiding on another’s property), speeding or reckless driving. With those arrests they have the right to check with the E-Harmony.com, a dating organization promising to match you with the love of your life, founded by Neil Clark Warren, an evangelical with ties to Dobson’s Focus on the Family, is being sued by Linda Carlson of In Newt Gingrich on immigration reform: "The announcement ... that the White House and a group of senators have reached an agreement on 'comprehensive immigration reform' should have the same effect that the word 'iceberg' had on the passengers and crew of the Titanic."... QUOTE OF THE MONTH: This is important: "Today, when a concerted effort is made to obliterate this point, it cannot be repeated too often that the Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals – that it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government – that it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government." – Ayn Rand |
