Dr. Robert Sumner passed away in December 2016. The Biblical Evangelist newspaper is no longer being published and the ministry of Biblical Evangelism has ceased operation. The remaining inventory of his books and gospel tracts was transferred to The Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles and may be ordered here. Victory In The Empire State! Remember the problem we reported months back about the Milford (NY) Central School board refusing to allow the “after hours” Good News Club, an arm of the Child Evangelism Fellowship, to meet on school facilities because the club was religious – even though permission was freely granted to other clubs like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H clubs? Although it clearly violated the equal access law, the board stubbornly held its position. We are happy to report that, while it had to go all the way to the United States Supreme Court, justice ruled and in a 6-3 verdict the court said the school board was wrong and must give permission for the Bible club to meet. Associate Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion and was joined by Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Associate Justices Breyer, Kennedy, O’Conner and Scalia concurred. Stevens, Souter and former ACLU attorney Ginsburg disagreed. What a waste of private and taxpayer money in making this case go all the way to the high court. And what, pray tell, caused three on the court to dissent? Was it because it disagreed with their personal radical views? The law was clearly on the side of the Bible club for “equal access.” If they were denied, everyone had to be denied; if others were granted permission, they had to be given authorization. As could be expected, the head of the radical Americans United for the Abolition of God from Public Places (oops; I mean “United for Separation of Church and State”), Mr. Barry Lynn, announced that the court’s decision, which he called a “terrible mistake,” would make a new way for “aggressive fundamentalist evangelists” to proselytize school kids. Never mind that all the parents of all the children involved had given their permission for participation, it provided a new avenue for his “hate God” ministries. And to think, the AUSCS started out as a noble organization over a half-century ago. How times have changed and how times change organizations. I am an “aggressive fundamentalist evangelist,” do you think I could speak there the next time I’m in the area (like this September)? |
