One Jump Too Many

A 30-year-old Canadian skydiver from Quebec had successfully completed approximately 4,700 jumps before bailing out above Skydive DeLand in that Florida city the other day. Attempting to pull off a delicate and risky high-speed turn (a maneuver that enables the jumper to approach the ground at a high rate of speed yet permit a horizontal glide near earth that makes a soft landing possible), he apparently misjudged the distance. He smashed into the pavement at a tremendous speed. Although paramedics and a doctor started work on him immediately and a helicopter flew him to the Halifax Medical Center, he did not survive. He had taken that sky diving gamble once too often. And he was only 30!

It reminded me of the many, many people whom I have urged to get saved immediately over the past 55 or 60 years, but who have responded, in essence, “Don’t worry about me. I’ll get saved eventually. I’ve already turned down Christ 4,700 times and I’m still around with an opportunity to be saved.” Alas, then came the final rejection, followed by sudden destruction, and it is all over for eternity! What a tragedy. Proverbs 29:1 puts it like this, “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” Without remedy! Don’t trifle with God; it is too risky.
