Faith That Endures: A PracticalCommentary On The Book Of Hebrews
J. Dwight Pentecost

Bible students have learned over the years that offerings by Pentecost are well worth perusing even if every conclusion is not accepted. This volume is no different. After a full outline covering over 3 pages at the start, he has divided his material into 4 sections, “Superior to the Angels” (1:1-2:18), “Superior to Moses” (3:1-4:13), “Superior to Aaron” (4:14-10:18), and “Superiority Applied” (10:19-13:25). Many of his practical applications are at the bottom of the pages in a shaded area.

Pentecost is convinced Paul wrote it (we agree) and states his reasons under two main arguments in his Introduction. Since the subjects of the various warning items, notably chapters 6 and 10 (especially chapter 10), are subjects of great debate, we will say that Pentecost feels they were written to believers who were considering observing “certain feasts and rituals in the temple without giving up their faith in Christ, the Jewish community might overlook the fact that they had renounced their identification with the nation and had identified with Christ” (we disagree). This does not seem to harmonize with the strong “apostasy” language of those portions. He does not think Melchizedek was a theophany (we agree).

All things considered, we think all our readers will find considerable help. We are glad to recommend it.
