TALK ABOUT “MISS”PLACED!
Dr. Robert L. Sumner

Annikea Sorenstam, indisputably the best woman golfer in the world, took part in a sideshow that saw her playing on the men’s tour, the PGA, at its Colonial event in Fort Worth, Texas. She didn’t belong there and we were bored out of our socks with all the “media talking heads” who praised it to the skies. Poor Vijay Singh was persecuted by the media unmercifully – finally dropping out of the tournament – for daring to express his proper but politically incorrect opinion that she didn’t belong there. He was right; she didn’t!

Our impression of Miss Sorenstam was that she is a polite, friendly lady (admittedly, we only saw her with the cameras on her, when most females – and males – behave very properly) and a tremendous lady golfer. It should have been apparent to all who know the Word of God that she would start well and fade fast. Why?

Because Peter declared about the ladies, “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered” (I Peter 3:7, emphasis added). Women are made different from men and were not given by the Creator the physical stamina with which men are endowed. That is why there are no lady defensive tackles on the Miami Dolphins or the New York Jets.

Men hit the ball from a longer tee than do the ladies. In fact, it is so far back that I jokingly said to someone that when I hit from the men’s pro tee it took me two strokes just to get up to the ladies’ tee. That means a player must walk a much greater distance in the PGA than in the LPGA, even on the same course. Poor Miss Sorenstam started great but was beginning to show “signs of wear” by the end of round one. If there had been no cut and all the players had played the regulation 72 holes, she would have probably finished dead last. As it was, with the cut, she managed to beat a small handful of men. In two rounds, she was 5 over par; the winner, Kenny Perry, was 19 under par for four rounds.

Now let’s have Tiger Wood get a “sponsor’s exemption” to play in the women’s LPGA – and listen to the screaming from the same talking heads!
