Dr. Robert Sumner passed away in December 2016. The Biblical Evangelist newspaper is no longer being published and the ministry of Biblical Evangelism has ceased operation.

The remaining inventory of his books and gospel tracts was transferred to The Baptist Tabernacle of Los Angeles and may be ordered here.

Off the Cuff! (Part 3)
Dr. Robert L. Sumner

FALSE CHARGES

Since I have written books and/or articles about many of the major cults of our day (Worldwide Church of God, Mormonism, The Way International, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc.), some would call me a cult expert. While I don’t claim that, I do very definitely know my way around the cults.

God allowed me to be present – in the process of spending four days evaluating the ministry of Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr., and the Fundamentalist Baptist Tabernacle – at the very time the Los Angeles Times article was printed with its attack (weekend of August 11-14, 1988) on them. I returned later that year and interviewed several of the former members and heard their allegations, with only one member of the church present (as a witness to later affirm or deny my accuracy in quoting them). I also interviewed at random many current members – anyone who wanted to talk to me. I concluded at that time that all the charges, including abuse and anti-Semitism, were untrue.

Because of the nature of humans, divisions in churches often happen that end in split-offs from the body and it appeared to me that all the allegations being made in this case were of that nature.

I have been available for many years on the Board of Reference of the Fundamentalist Baptist Tabernacle and willing to respond to charges of cultic behavior on the part of Dr. Hymers or leaders at the Tabernacle. While my name and phone number has been accessible for all these years, the critics have never contacted me. Certainly none has ever offered me any proof of their charges.

WARNING: A teacher in Thailand, Curt Mathis, was formerly associated with Dr. Bob Gray at the Longview Baptist Temple in that Texas City. Gray, alas, is a Jack Hyles clone – only worse (it is common for the student to go in excess of the teacher). This man formerly taught at Gray’s church college and is currently owed nearly $5,000 in back salary. This money has been owed our brother for nearly 20 years, which seems like long time for the church/college to refuse payment. Some – including this writer – would call it stealing.

Mathis tried repeatedly to get the money and eventually, because he is so far away, his dad (as a member of Gray’s church) tried to get it. Alas again, to no avail. In fact, his effort was rewarded by being told to ‘find another church’ (something Gray says he never does; by, the way, the parents took his advice and they are no longer members there). Mathis also earned a master's degree from the college, but has never received it.

The brother's e-mail is curtpui@gmail.com. Obviously, he would like help from someone. He has a tape recording of his parent’s last meeting with Gray. If you would like a copy, or have any suggestions for him, contact our brother at his e-mail address and discuss the matter with him.

THIS & THAT . . .

A prayer of George Washington is good for our elections this month: “May the father of all mercies scatter light, and not darkness, upon our paths, and make us in all our several vocations useful here, and in His own due time and way everlastingly happy"...

As we go to the polls remember what General H. Norman Schwartzkopf told us: “Character is the single most important ingredient of leadership"...

Two other media columnists summed up an American problem well. L. Brent Bozell noted: “At the summit of national power, politicians and bureaucrats are terrified at the idea of endorsing the religious views of the majority of Americans. Our First Amendment forbids the establishment of a state religion, but many of our governing elites are taking it a step further, outlawing its very existence from the public conversation.” And Charles Krauthammer adds: “It is two centuries since the passage of the First Amendment, and our presidential candidates still cannot distinguish establishment from free exercise”…

Columnist Mark Steyn put our seasonal problem like this: "The holiday season is here, so it's time to engage in the time-honored Christmas tradition of objecting to every time-honored Christmas tradition"…

Former President Ronald Reagan expressed it: “Christmas casts its glow upon us, as it does every year. And it reminds us that we need not feel lonely because we are loved, loved with the greatest love there has ever been or ever will be”…

Early Christmas present! The anti-God, anti-Bible and, in our judgment, anti-American ACLU begged its friends to match the $1.2 million its Northern California branch donated to defeat the constitutional amendment in that State seeking to define marriage as between one man and one woman...

Sodomites in California take their perversion seriously. A group passing out literature favoring the biblical marriage amendment at Santa Rosa Junior College had a car pull up beside the workers, roll down the window, and throw a cup of hot coffee into the face of one of them. But I guess that’s what you’d expect from Sodomites…

Surprise! Surprise! Liberal Democrat California Senator Dianne Feinstein announced that she is "agin" the amendment! She complained that the poor Sodomites couldn't "marry" if it passed (sob, sob). Dianne, they can’t ‘conceive’ even if they do ‘marry’...

Since the Empire State was lit up in green (for “go”?) last year in honor of Islam’s Ramadan and sponsors said it would become an annual event, we assume it will happen again this year. Honoring Christmas, of course, would be unlawful, illegal and in bad taste – politically incorrect! But ‘way to go’ Muslims (and your murderous terrorists)...

Ah, politics! At the Donkey convention in Denver, there were 4,440 delegates and 15,000 media boys and girls. At the Elephant party in St. Paul, a pre-party estimate was 2,000 delegates, 2,000 alternates and the same 15,000 media (then the hurricane spoiled the party and we never did hear how many were actually present)…

Obama laughs at McCain as being part of the Washington establishment because he has been in the Senate 21 years, so he picked a man as his running mate who has been there 36 years!...

Jonah Goldberg on the Democrat V-P nomination: “When Obama, the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, according to the 2007 vote scoring done by National Journal, picks the third-most-liberal senator, does that count as reaching across the aisle?”…

The Patriot on Biden: “[He, in addition to having to quit the 1988 presidential primary after revelations he was plagiarizing a British politicians speeches], also plagiarized a law review article at Syracuse University, lied about having attended college on an academic scholarship, lied about how many degrees he had earned, and lied about having graduated in the top half of his law school class (he was 76th in a class of 85). ‘I exaggerate when I’m angry,’ Biden once said, ‘but I’ve never gone around telling people things that aren’t true about me.’ Clearly, this guy can’t even tell the truth about not telling the truth”…

Brian Burch, the president of the Roman Catholic group, Fidelis, called Obama’s selection of Joe Biden “a slap in the face to Catholic voters” everywhere. Biden has always, throughout his political career, been a strong pro-choice, pro-baby killer…

Catholic diocese will not invite or permit Biden to speak at their functions or schools in the diocese where he lives. That is Bishop Michael Saltarelli’s position…

We don’t even know who said this, but it is a good reflection (in spite of the poor word invention): “We may be misunderestimating Barack. But the question of 2008 remains: When all is said and done, who is this guy?” They said the same about the Lone Ranger and Superman – but they were fantasy figures...

Confession is good for the soul, they say. Anyway, Barack Obama admitted he “was probably too flip” with his “above my pay grade” response to Rick Warren’s question about when is a baby is entitled to human rights. Okay, so, then, Barack, what is your serious answer?...

In our area, Barack has repeatedly run a commercial trying to connect McCain to Bush (who has a lowly 29% approval rating), in which McCain is quoted, “I voted with Bush 90% of the time.” What Obama doesn’t say is that he voted with the Democrats in Congress (who have a 9% approval rating) 97% of the time…

Did you see all those miniature American flags waving at the convention in Denver? When the circus was over, 12,000 of them were trashed! Radio host Dan Caplis rescued them and they were shortly waving where they were appreciated: in St. Paul at “the other” convention. An Obama spokesman called it “a cheap political stunt.” Oh, at which convention?…

A good word from a strange source: Donna Shalala, Bill Clinton's Secretary of Health & Human Services, who now heads the University of Miami, on the Amethyst Initiative statement college presidents issued calling for lowering the drinking age (she refused to sign the paper): "I remember college campuses when we had 18-year-old drinking ages, and I honestly believe we've made some progress ... To just shift it back down to the high schools makes no sense at all"...

The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) took over Washington Mutual in late September, the largest bank failure in our nation's history. The latter was sold by the FDIC for $1.9 billion to JPMorgan Chase & Co...

Does character count? Col. Roger Ingvalson, ex-POW: "I spent two years with John McCain in some of the worst circumstances imaginable. I have spent time with John under much better circumstances in the years since. John McCain has the highest integrity of any political leader I have ever had the privilege of knowing, and I have known plenty."

Ex-Governor of Arkansas, ex-Baptist pastor Mike Huckabee on McCain: “I believe he's a man of deep convictions and authentic Christian faith"…

Heading toward a police state? Prior to the elections, Obama warned TV stations about airing an ad by a non-profit group linking him to a boastful, unrepentant terrorist of the 1970s who bombed several federal buildings (William Ayers, founder of the Weatherman Underground organization; Obama launched his political career in Bill’s living room!). We saw the ad and it is careful, reasonable and documented, but he scared many stations away from airing it. Obama even asked the Justice Department to intervene and block it. So much for free speech! But, hey, he won his early political campaigns by getting his opponents disqualified from the ballot, winning unopposed...

I was musing the other Sunday afternoon about the Obama smile (it is a winner!) and realized the last presidential candidate we had with a smile like that was Jimmy Carter. Their politics are similar, too (are they laughing at us? or smiling at their good fortune?)…

Here is what Dick Morris, the man credited with getting Bill Clinton re-elected in 1996 when it looked hopeless, said about McCain/Palin: “When we look at McCain's loving adoption of a child from a Bangladeshi orphanage run by Mother Teresa and Palin's knowing birth of a handicapped baby, we see a quality of character on this ticket worthy of the White House”…

Ellison Research said its new survey finds many Americans can't define the term "evangelical Christian." We are not surprised. Many preachers who call themselves evangelical are so vague about their beliefs, how would we expect the people in the pew to know?...

Poor Charlie Rangel, Harlem's gift to Congress. The Democrat chair of the House Ways and Means Committee (it has to do with the tax code) got caught failing to report at least $75,000 in taxable income. His villa at the posh Punta Cana Yacht Club in the Dominican Republic rents for $500 a night and managers at the club say it is the most popular property on the beach. Charlie claims he didn't realize he had the income, but if an extra $75k or so appeared in my bank account, I'd check on it pronto (as they say in the D.R.). By the way, this kind of monkeyshines can get a fellow up to five years in the slammer, but not to worry – Charlie has good connections. It's not like he was a Republican from Texas, you know...

George Orwell, in his amazing book, 1984: “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act”...

Is the Democratic Party “becoming the home of the most immoral politicians and candidates in the country"? That’s the charge of Peter LaBarbera, president of ATAH (Americans for Truth About Homosexuality) after Mike Colana, a St. Louis Sodomite lawyer who has worked for a homosexual pornographic website, ran for, openly campaigned as, and won the Democrat primary for the Missouri legislature. Since there is no candidate running against him, his election to the Missouri legislature is automatic. He will be the fourth openly Sodomite in that body…

And this guy is the head of all Anglican Churches worldwide? Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, in spiritual insight/wisdom only he could understand, has declared Sodomites, “in a commitment similar to traditional marriage,” is something not forbidden by the Bible. Chapter and verse, please, Archbishop…

Pastor, you think you got problems? Pity, Jay Wolf, who leads First Baptist of Montgomery (AL). He has two deacons in his church running for the same job of representing Alabama’s Second Congressional District, Democrat Bobby Bright and Republican Jay Love…

So, you think you’ve heard ‘everything’ from our judges? Listen again: Fremont County (IA) Judge Timothy O’Grady recently ruled that a nude dance by an underage girl at the Shotgun Geniez strip club was legal because it was “art” and protected under the First Amendment. Was he sober when he so ruled, or a customer/fan? So nudity by a 17-year-old child performing in a booze dive is protected under the First Amendment? Give me a break!…

The Florida Federation of Republican Women announced a boycott of The Oprah Winfrey Show and is urging subscribers to her O magazine to cancel their subscriptions. Why? Because she has refused to permit Sarah Palin to be on her show, even though she built her career on women and their ‘rights.’ Oprah doesn’t want her show to be political, she says. The non-political Winfrey has openly endorsed Obama and campaigned with him at several spots…

Actress Lindsay Lohan (who may or may not have been drunk/on drugs when she said it – you decide) sneered: “Is our country so divided that the Republicans best hope is a narrow minded, media obsessed homophobe?”...

Ah, me, politics! Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe, said in a strategy memo: “We will respond with speed and ferocity to John McCain’s attacks and we will take the fight to him, but we will do it on the big issues that matter to the American people.” At exactly the same time, Obama was in New York mocking McCain’s computer illiteracy. So that is what Plouffe meant by “the major issues”? At least McCain know how many States we have! ...

Regarding the above item, the Boston Globe noted: “McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes.” But Obama wouldn’t know about that, would he, being a non-military man!…

The top leaders in both the National Association of Evangelicals (Leith Anderson) and World Evangelical Alliance (Geoff Tunnicliffe) were among the naïve 150 or so signing the “Common Word” agreement between Muslims and Christians that outlaws “attempted conversions.” We predict: 1). Muslims will go right on forcing conversion around the world (and killing the refusals); 2). Sumner and other religious fanatics will go right on seeking to win Muslims to Christ, trying to keep them out of Hell! Are Leith and Geoff saying, “Let ’em be damned?”…

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an arm of the United Nations. It totally supports abortion. Now we need a Convention on the Elimination of Killing Little Babies (CEKLB), right?...

Kill the baby or kill the mother? A lady in India, Neelam Kumar, refused to have an abortion. Her husband, with the help of other family members, killed her...

Who is Alveda King? She is the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. (a Republican) and she went to the Denver Democratic Party convention in August to speak out against the Donkey platform favoring abortion. Saying it violated civil rights, she noted it fails to recognize the unborn’s right to life. She also argued that although Democrats are reaching out to Christian voters, she wanted them to know the Word of God supports the rights of everyone, and “that includes the pre-born," and she is sure that if her uncle were alive today he would join her in trying to save those precious children from the abortionist’s knife. She went from Denver to St. Paul to give the Elephant folks the same message…

Drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, the crook that got convictions for Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean (10 years in the slammer) finally got nine years himself – less than the agents who were merely doing their job and following police procedure. In the meantime, the Fifth Circuit Court upheld the convictions of the agents...

Ah, Congress! They have so much time and so little to do! With war, economy, gas prices, getting re-elected and all the other burdens of the world on their shoulders, they still found time to pass House Resolution 194, apologizing for "centuries of brutal dehumanization and injustices" against blacks. While it was authored by the Jewish Congressman from Memphis, it had 120 co-sponsors. Alas, the resolution didn't mention that blacks in America have it better than anywhere else in the world, or that many American blacks have it better than many American whites. Small matter! The important point is that things that happened centuries ago – with which you and I had nothing to do – have been "apologized." Did we mention that Jewish Steve Cohen, whose district is predominately black, got this passed shortly before the elections? It passed by voice vote. Hey, who is going to vote against motherhood and apple pie?...

"Big Oil" ExxonMobil made a recent quarterly profit of $11 billion. Not as publicized by the media is the $61.7 billion tax it paid for the first six months of 2008...

Was ‘race a factor in this year’s presidential election?’ is like asking if the pope is Catholic. Obama rolled up margins of 90-10 among blacks over Hillary (wife of the ‘first black president’), and a Rasmussen poll before the election showed him whupping McCain among blacks 94-1. They didn’t give a hoot (or apparently know a hoot) about the issues. They just wanted a president who is at least 8% black!...

Oprah Winfrey and Sarah Palin: A fellow by the name of Robert Bowie Johnson, Jr., on his blog, has contrasted the beliefs of these two women. Here is the source of revelation for each: "Sarah believes the Scriptures are the Word of God and they are His infallible words in the original languages," he wrote. On the other hand, "Oprah believes that divine revelation comes from her New Age guru, Eckhart Tolle – and that he is infallible and that his words supercede the words of Christ and all of Scripture." Johnson concluded: "Sarah worships the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Oprah worships herself"…

Will Rogers put it like this: “It’s easy being a humorist when you’ve got the whole government working for you”...

According to Baptist Press, Masab Yousef, eldest son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a leader in the Hamas organazation on the West Bank, has openly declared his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Converted in 2004, he thought he could remain both a Muslim and a follower of Christ. He discovered such was impossible and he has now taken a bold stand openly for Christ. May his tribe be multiplied!...

Basketball coach John Wooden, a committed Christian, has long been an inspiration to hundreds of thousands, including your editor. His first year of coaching (at Dayton High in Kentucky) was a losing one – and that was the last! While his career spanned 32 years, he spent 27 at the helm of UCLA's hardwood boys and during that time won 10 national championships – seven of them back to back – something never done before nor since...

Chuck Baldwin, a third-party candidate running for President on the Constitution Party ticket, warned that the country is teetering on the brink of socialism. He used the bank bailout to illustrate his point. Alas, while I wish it were not true, he is right!

We told you about the hanky-panky the bigwigs in California pulled to change the ballot title and summary on California's marriage amendment "to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." The courts refused to change it…
